U19s start European Cup qualification with victory over Belarus

Germany U19s’ campaign to reach the 2018 European Cup in Finland began with victory over Belarus. Meikel Schönweitz’s side hit four second-half goals on the way to their 5-1 victory. Team captain Kai Havertz of Bayer Leverkusen scored in the 17th, 57th, 64th and 90th minutes while Hertha BSC’s Arne Maier got other goal for Die Mannschaft.

“We had the game under control from the onset. We were dominant and took our chances,” said Schönweitz. “It was a completely different test to our previous game in England but we took on the challenge in a mature way; it was a good way to start the campaign. Now we can look to the match against Northern Ireland.”

Germany on the offensive from the start

The DFB coach had said even before the match had begun that he wanted his side to focus on the game at hand: “We’re looking to get stuck in from the start. We’re going to make sure to play our game and concentrate on our strengths.”

That is exactly what happened as Germany put Belarus on the back foot from the first whistle. The opener came from link-up play between two experienced Bundesliga players, as Maier set up Havertz with 17 minutes gone.

Kai Havertz extended the lead to two shortly before the break but this was halved by Miroslav Khlebosolov two minutes later. Belarus’ Andrei Pilipovets was shown red in the 63rd for a foul in the area, allowing Havertz to secure his hat-trick from the spot. Belarus ended the game with nine men after Gleb Shevchenko was shown a second yellow only five minutes after the first sending-off. Maier and Havertz linked up again for Germany’s fourth before the Leverkusen player got his fourth of the night in injury time
