U19s open Euro account with defeat to Holland

The German under-19 side suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Holland in their first European Championship group game in Georgia on Monday.

Frank Kramer’s team went down 4-1 in Tbilisi and sit fourth and last in the Group B after England defeated Bulgaria 2-0 in the other game.

Aymane Barkok gave the Germans the lead just after the break but Holland dominated from there on in. Joal Piroe scored a quick double on the hour - both headers - to turn the game around before completing his hat-trick with ten minutes left. Jay-Roy Grot rubbed salt into the wounds with a fourth in injury time in front of 1250 spectators.

Germany play Bulgaria next in Gori on Thursday before a potential showdown with England in Tbilisi on Sunday.

Coach Kramer said: “We played really well in the first half and pressed well. After we went 2-1 down we gave them far too much space. We are obviously disappointed to start out tournament like this but we will get up and go again. The fact they took their chances and we didn’t decided the game.”
