Germany U19s narrowly missed out on reaching the European Championships in Finland. On the final matchday of the second qualification round, Meikel Schönweitz’s side ran out 4-1 winners over the Netherlands courtesy of a Manuel Wintzheimer brace alongside goals from Alfons Amade and Kai Havertz. The result meant they finished the group on six points - joint with Norway – but Norway went through on head-to-head.
Norway won their fixture on the last matchday due to a 91st minute winning penalty to beat Scotland 5-4, booking their place at the European Championships in the process. Norway were trailing 4-2 in the 82nd minute before scoring three goals in quick succession. The results sadly mean the end of the “Road to Finland” for Germany U19s as they fell at the final hurdle.
“It’s tough to take,” said Schönweitz. “The lads played one of the best games I’d seen them play and it showed how much potential we have in this year group. However, things didn’t go as we needed them to in the other game. We were two minutes away from heading to the Euros so it’s frustrating. You almost couldn’t write it. Scotland were winning 4-2 late on and lost 5-4 meaning that we went out. In truth, it wasn’t today’s games that cost us our place. It was the 5-2 loss to Norway. We have to congratulate them on qualifying and wish them all the best.”
Havertz to Wintzheimer opens the scoring
In front of 4011 fans in the Wersestadion in Ahlen, the visitors had the first real chance as they hit the post in the second minute. However, the hosts soon got a foothold on the game and opened the scoring as captain Kai Havertz set Wintzheimer through who finished at the near post on the half hour mark. The goal was the sole one of the half.
After the break, the Netherlands started brightly and equalised with 50 minutes gone through Orkun Kokcu. The game became end-to-end with both sides throwing caution to the win. Then, FC Bayern Munich’s Wintzheimer took the game by the scruff of the neck. He scored a second in the 70th minute and the Netherlands lost their impetus. Three minutes later, Amade hit in a third and Havertz converted a penalty in the closing stages as the game ended 4-1.
