U19s lose to the Netherlands in friendly

The Germany U19 team lost 1-2 at home to the Netherlands in a friendly. Dani de Wit gave the visitors the lead in the 24th minute in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Stadion in Luckenwalde. After Mats Köhlert found the equaliser for Germany in the 66th minute, the team were in a good position. However, it was the Netherlands who got the winner in the 73rd minutes through Jelle Duin.

The U19s beat the Netherlands one and a half months ago on penalties to come in fifth place at the European Championships. By doing so, they secured their place at the U20 World Cup Championship in South Korea in 2017.

“We were unlucky to lose,” said Kramer. “It’s a real shame for the boys. They could have been rewarded for their performance. We had lots of chances to go in front after we scored the equaliser and we were the better side. Their goal resulted from individual errors. However, we can learn from these situations.”

The Netherlands hit on the break

The team struggled a bit to find a rhythm at the beginning of the match. Germany had more possession in the opening stages, however, they made a few passing errors which led to the visitor’s goal. “We needed to find our feet at the beginning. We were passing well in midfield but not so well in the final third,” explained Kramer.

The Netherlands tried to hit Germany on the break and had the first few real chances. Germany keeper Finn Dahmen skillfully handled a free-kick from Tahith Chong in the 12th minute. Then Dani de Wit intercepted Niklas Dorsch’s shot and scored the first goal for the Netherlands (24’). Dahmen had a lot to deal with in the first half. The FSV Mainz 05 goalkeeper made two great saves against Chong and Jelle Duin to keep the Netherlands at bay.

Köhlert scores the equaliser

The loud Germany supporters had to wait until the 35th minute before Niklas Dorsch nearly scored. But the FC Bayern midfielder shot over the bar from 12 metres out. Just before half-time, Vitaly Janelt came close to scoring the equaliser with a long range effort at goal.

In the second half, Germany were looking more likely to score. They had their best chance of the match when Holland keeper Maarten Paes had to push Salih Özcan’s magnificent 20 yard shot around the post. Germany upped their tempo and were rewarded. Johannes Eggestein set up Mats Köhlert who scored the equaliser in the 66th minute.

U19s unable to find the winner

Germany were now on the front foot and it was surprising that they fell behind again. After superb build-up play Jelle Duin received the ball from a cross from the right and the AZ Alkmaar striker scored from nine metres out in the 73rd minute. Germany U19s kept their heads up and looked to find another equaliser. Substitute Nicklas Shipnoski broke away from two defenders at the right moment but didn’t manage to score despite getting himself into a promising position.

Substitute Niklas Schmidt then had two more chances to score the equaliser for Germany. But after receiving a fantastic pass from Idrissa Toure in the 84th minute, his shot rolled just centimetres wide of the post.
