U19s beaten by Portugal

The DFB-Team U19 side have also lost their second European Championship game in Baden-Württemberg, meaning that semi-final progression is out of the question. Guido Streichsbier’s men were beaten 4-3 by Portugal in Großaspach on Thursday. Philipp Ochs(12’, 68’, 90’+3) grabbed a hat-trick for the hosts but goals from Asumah Ankrah (37’), Gonçalo Rodrigues (50’), Alexandre Silva (70’) and Buta (73’) won the game for Portugal.

Streichsbier: "We let them hit us on the counter"

“We’re extremely disappointed,” explained Streichsbier, who added that “I thought we were good before the break, however, we dropped off which allowed them to lead. We did well to get back to 2-2 but then got caught up in the moment and let them hit us on the counter twice. Getting back to 4-3 was a good show of spirit. We have no points still, which isn’t good enough.”

The head coach already has one eye on the final game, stating that “fifth place is now a minimum. The lads want to play in the World Cup. We now need to prepare for Sunday’s match, as it’s a crucial game.”

Ochs was visibly disappointed after the final whistle. “I think that everyone was able to see that we’re a determined side and don’t ever give up. Silly errors cost us in the end,” announced the forward.

World Cup qualification still possible

Germany currently sit bottom of Group A with no points to their name, however, victory over Austria (2 points) on Sunday (19:30 CEST) would see them finish third in the group. This would enable them to play in the fifth/sixth play-off, with the winner of that going on to play in U20 World Cup in South Korea in 2017.
