U18s show great character to draw in France

The Germany U18 team drew their second meeting with France this week 1-1. Atakan Akkaynak struck the equaliser for Meikel Schönweitz’s team in the fourth minute of stoppage time in front of 2600 spectators. Elie Youan had given France the lead in the 45th minute from the penalty spot. Germany lost 2-1 when the two sides met last Thursday.

"I saw a terrific performance from the boys today," said Schönweitz. "We showed real hunger to win the game throughout the 90 minutes. We defended resiliently and were disciplined and played some very good football against an immensely strong opponent and we deserved to reward ourselves before we did. If it wasn’t for the very questionable penalty just before half-time then we would’ve kept a clean sheet today. However, we weren’t effective enough in the final third. The draw that we got in stoppage time after fighting so hard at the end feels like a win."
