U17s to play Ukraine in first European Championship group match

Finally it’s here! The Germany U17s will begin their European Championship finals campaign with their first group game against Ukraine at the National Stadium in Baku.

“We have been preparing for long enough and are looking forward to finally starting. Ukraine are a very compact team defensively who are have recently gone 18 matches unbeaten. We will have to break down their defence and find creative solutions,” said head coach Meikel Schönweitz.

Leipzig striker Renat Dadashov, who has Azerbaijani roots, is looking forward to the beginning of the tournament as well: “For me to play at the European Championships in my family’s home country is a very special experience. We want to show together as a team that we are ready and to win our first game. The fact that my family, friends and relatives will be in the stadium has given me additional motivation.”

It will not be an easy task against Ukraine according the the statistics: Oleksandr Petrakov’s side haven’t tasted defeat in their last 18 matches – something Germany will want to change. Schönweitz will have an almost full squad to choose from as only captain Atakan Akkaynak will miss out. He picked up a suspension and will have to watch on from the sidelines. The mood in the camp is very positive.
