U17s to face Lithuania, Finland and the Netherlands in Euro group

Exciting challenges await the Germany Women’s U17 team in their mission to defend the European Championship title this year in Lithuania from 9th to 21st May. The team have been drawn into Group A and will face Finland on 9th May, the Netherlands on 12th May and hosts Lithuania on 15th May. The draw was made today (6th April) in the State Musical Theatre in Kaunas, Lithuania.

“We’re delighted to have been drawn in the same group as the hosts – the atmosphere at that game is going to be electric and there’ll be lots of spectators,” says Germany coach Anouschka Bernhard. “Finland and the Netherlands are two really strong opponents. It’ll be a three-way battle for the two semi-final places. All in all, the two groups are even. We’re really looking forward to the tournament and we’re excited to see how we get on there.”

Germany with six U17 Euro titles

Germany travel to Lithuania as defending champions and are looking to add a seventh title to the collection in the Baltic state. The women’s youth team won the past two tournaments at Belarus 2016 and in the Czech Republic the following year. Bernhard’s side won the qualifying round in Germany with wins coming against Azerbaijan (5-0), Iceland (3-1) and Ireland (2-0).

The two groups of four will play the group stage of the European championship in Lithuanian cities Marijampolė, Alytus and Šiauliai. The Euro finals will also serve as a route for European qualification to the 2018 U17 World Cup in Uruguay (13th November until 1st December). Both finalists will qualify directly, while the semi-finalists battle it out for third place, which will be the third ticket to the World Cup.
