U17s rescue a point in dramatic circumstances

Germany’s U17 scored twice late on to earn a point in their second Algarve Cup game. Meikel Schönweitz’s side fought back from 2-0 down to ensure they remain top of the table with four points. England (2), Portugal (2) and the Netherlands (1) complete the group. Germany won their first game against the Netherlands 1-0 two days ago.

”The team showed good character today,” explained: “We dominated the game and created plenty of chances but put ourselves in a bad position because we conceded two avoidable goals on the counter. However, our late strikes rewarded our effort out there. The late equaliser felt like a winner to be honest.”

George Hirst’s brace (16’ and 23’) gave England a comfortable advantage but Germany continued to press throughout the game. Florian Baak (73’) got one back for the DFB Team and Renat Dadashov equalised with the last kick of the game to complete a famous comeback.

The tournament comes to a close for Germany on Tuesday (16:00 CET) when they face hosts Portugal. The competition is a warm-up for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers, which take place in March. Schönweitz and Co. will face Slovakia, the Netherlands and Bulgaria at that event.
