U17 World Cup: Ludewig picks up a knee injury, Vagnoman called up as a replacement

Bad news for the Germany U17s. Just before their World Cup opener against Costa Rica on Saturday (KO 13:30 CEST), Kilian Ludewig has suffered a knee injury. The RB Leipzig player picked up the knock in training on Thursday afternoon and will be out for the duration of the competition. Coach Christian Wück has already called up a replacement for Ludewig, Hamburger SV’s Josha Vagnoman, who was on the standby list in case of injuries. Vagnoman will now travel to join up with the U17s in India.

“Kilian’s injury, so soon before the first World Cup game, is a big shame,” Coach Wück said. He had played a big role in our plans. The first priority for him is a quick and full recovery. We wish him all the best with his recuperation. In Josha, we have called up a player who plays in a similar position to Kilian and who has more than proven his ability with Hamburger SV in the U19 Bundesliga.”

“The injury has obviously come at a really unfortunate time,” U17 international Kilian Ludewig said. “I felt really good and was really excited for the first World Cup game. I wish the team every success for the tournament and I hope the boys can get a win in the opener against Costa Rica.”
