U17 World Cup draw: Germany face Costa Rica, Guinea and Iran

It’s an interesting group that Germany’s U17s have been put in. The U17 World Cup in India sees Christian Wück’s boys come up against Costa Rica, Iran, and Guinea in Group C. The tournament is scheduled to start on October 6th, with the final due to take place on October 28th. Germany kick off their campaign with a game against Costa Rica in Goa on October 7th. The match against Iran comes three days later on October 10th in Goa as well, before Germany round off their group-stage games with a clash against Guinea in Kochi on October 13th. 24 teams overall are taking part in the U17 World Cup, with the best two teams of each group – as well as the four best third-placed teams – securing themselves a berth in the Round of 16.

“We’re happy with the draw. The match-ups against Costa Rica, Iran, and Guinea will prove to be a different experience for our boys as we’re coming against totally different mindsets,” said Wück. The DFB manager was on hand to watch the draw take place in Mumbai on Friday, as a part of a DFB delegation which included Maika Fischer and Markus Schneeweis. Wück is looking forward to the tournament, saying: “The atmosphere was exceptional. The people are very much looking forward to this World Cup. It’s a real advantage to be able to play our group-stage games in Goa and Kochi.” The two cities are three-and-a-half hours away from each other via aeroplane – a short journey given the size of India and its population of 1.3 billion.

Preparations underway

The U17 World Cup is set to be played across the cities of New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati, and Calcutta. Each location has one stadium available to be used. In the last edition of the tournament in Chile in 2015, Germany went out in the Round of 16 to Croatia (2-0). Defending champions Nigeria were unable to qualify, but India, Niger, and New Caledonia are three teams who are making their first appearance at the U17 World Cup. Now manager Wück and his assistants will set their sights on preparing their boys for their upcoming opponents, and continue to tinker with the squad he intends to take to India.

Germany qualified for the tournament thanks to a convincing European Championship showing in Croatia in May. Finishing top of the group, they then went on to beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the quarter-final, thereby securing themselves automatic qualification for the World Cup. Unfortunately, the U17s weren’t able to lift the trophy after being defeated in a tight game on penalties, losing 4-2 in the shootout to champions Spain.
