U17 Women’s team secure semi-final spot

Germany’s U17 national team has qualified for the European Championships semi-final after a 2-1 victory over France in their second group game at the EURO’s 2017 in the Czech Republic. Even before Monday’s encounter with the hosts, the DFB Team has secured a spot amongst the best four teams in Europe.

Following the 4-1 victory over Spain in their first game of the tournament, the team of Anouschka Bernhard struggled at times but still managed to claim three points against France. Turbine Potsdam’s Melissa Kössler fired Germany into the lead with a brace of goals in the first half, before Maelle Lakrars pulled one back for France in the second half.

Bernhard: “The game wasn’t great for the eye”

With six points from two games, Germany are automatically through to the semi-finals even before facing the Czech Republic on Monday, who are yet to record a point this tournament.

However, Anouschka Bernhard wasn’t entirely satisfied with the display. “We struggled today and didn’t manage to get into the game well. We were not able to follow up our performance from the Spain game,” said the DFB Team coach. “On the other hand, we looked stable in defence today. The game surely wasn’t great for the eye, but you have to win these types of games and we deserved it in the end.”

Two changes in the starting line-up

Bernhard made two changes to the starting line-up from the Spain game, with FC Bayern’s Sophie Riepl replacing Anna Hausdorff (Eintracht Bamberg) at right-back and Verena Wieder (FC Bayern) came on for Sportfreunde Siegen’s Lena Uebach.

The changes did not appear to have an impact on Germany’s performance, as Bernhard relished the fact that Germany looked secure in defence against a determined French side. Kössler, now on three goals this tournament, applied the winning touch to earn a deserved victory.

Germany’s U17 side are the defending champions in the Czech Republic, after last year’s victory at the EURO’s in Belarus. Overall, Germany’s U17 teams have won the tournament five times.
