U17 men win group with win over Austria

Winning the group was their aim and they managed exactly that. The Germany U17 men’s side emerged as convincing 4-0 winners against Austria in their final group-stage game at the European U17 Championship in Azerbaijan and secured progression to the quarter-finals. They’ll be back at the Dalga Arena in Baku to take on Belgium, who finished second in Group A behind Portugal.

"We have to be alert from the very first minute in order to win the game," said manager Meikel Schönweitz before the game, and his team followed his instructions. They scored from their first attack when Yari Otto’s shot was deflected in by Austria defender Luca Meisl, putting Germany 1-0 up on 15 minutes.

Akkaynak and Havertz continue the scoring

Austria tried to make the most of their pace but failed to find many gaps in the Germany defence. They forced a corner in the 24th minute but Germany used the opportunity to counter and the move was finished off by captain Atakan Akkaynak, who put his side 2-0 up.

Germany added a third before the break, once again via a deflection, when Havertz converted from the edge of the area after being laid off by Otto. The icing on the cake was added by Dadashov with just nine minutes left on the clock, wrapping up a comfortable 4-0 win for Germany over their neighbours.
