U17 and U19 qualifying rounds drawn

The European Championship qualifying round draw was made in Nyon, Switzerland with DFB Vice President Dr. Hans-Dieter Drewitz in attendance. Germany U19s will face Slovakia, Ireland and the Czech Republic in the so called elite round. “We look forward to this challenging task, which we will approach with confidence. Every game in the second qualifying round is like a final, since only the first-placed team qualifies for the next stage. Our goal has to be to qualify for the European Championships,” said U19 manager Marcus Sorg. The U19 finals will take place in Greece from 6th-19th July 2015.

Niklas Stark offered a helping hand during the draw and appeared satisfied with the outcome: “It was a huge honour for me to come here as the captain of 2014’s U19 European Champions and help with the draw for the upcoming tournament. I think that it’s an interesting draw and obviously wish Marcus Sorg and his team the best of luck on their way to Greece,” explained the current U21 international.

U17 against Italy, Slovakia and Ukraine

Germany U17s side were drawn with Italy, Slovakia and Ukraine. Manager Christian Wück said afterwards: “We know Italy from the four-nations tournament and they have a very talented team. Overall we expect an exciting group, which will require playing to our full potential if we want to progress.”

The eight group winners and the seven runners-up with the best record against the teams first and third in their pool qualify to join hosts Bulgaria in the expanded 16-nation finals from 6th–22nd May 2015. Teams taking part in this competition, will also have one eye on qualification for another major tournament. The top three in each finals group will progress to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile from 17th October–8th November.

Both qualifying tournaments will be held in Germany

The U17 and U19 qualifying tournaments will take place in Germany. The U17 elite round was scheduled for 21st-26th March, while the U19 teams will play their qualifying segment between 26th and 31st March. This was the conclusion reached by the participating football associations in UEFA’s headquarters.

“Obviously this will result in a substantial level of effort in terms of organisation, but thankfully we have a very good infrastructure in Germany and are blessed with great support from regional associations and clubs. We offer optimal framework conditions for our junior international teams and will also have the home advantage,” said Joti Chatzialexiou, superintendent at the U-national team office.
