U17 Algarve cup success

The draw would have been enough, but the U17 side were sure to finish on a high. Meikel Schönweitz’s side put in an emphatic performance, beating hosts Portugal 5-0 in the final match of the Algarve Cup in Faro-Loulé.

Schönweitz was proud of his team following the result: "We played a top team today, who had not lost in 23 games, managed to score five goals and put in an outstanding performance."

Leipzig’s Dadashov grabs a first-half brace

Goal-getter Renat Dadashov of RB Leipzig scored his third and fourth goals of the tournament in the first half, laying the basis for an emphatic win. Sven Sonnenberg of 1. FC Köln extended their lead at the start of the second half, effectively putting the game to bed. Arne Maier of Hertha BSC and Jano Baxmann of Werder Bremen put the gloss on the scoreline, adding a further goal each.

Germany finished the tournament on seven points, ahead of the Netherlands (4), England (2) and Portugal (2). In the initial two matches, the U17s defeated the Netherlands 1-0, before rescuing a last-minute 2-2 draw against England. In March, the German youth side will face Slovakia, the Netherlands and Bulgaria in Nordrhein-Westfalia, hoping to book their place in the 2016 European Championships in Azerbaijan.
