U 21 Championship under the patronage of Gerhard Schröder

The UEFA European Under-21 Championship taking place in Germany from May 27 to June 8 in Bochum, Mainz, Mannheim and Oberhausen will be held under the patronage of the chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Gerhard Schröder.

„The audience will be able to look forward to a tournament with exciting and high-class performance. I am convinced that some of the Under-21 players will also be playing at the FIFA World Championship 2006 in Germany. People from all over the world and many different cultures will then be united by football as well as they are with the European Under-21 Championship this year. That is why I happily agreed to the patronage of the tournament with participants from Switzerland, Serbia and Montenegro, Italy, Belarus, Croatia, Portugal, Sweden and Germany“, Schröder said. „I would like to thank the German Football Association (DFB) and its many helpers and volunteers. The organization of such an important tournament is a big challenge but it is also a sign of confidence by the UEFA towards the DFB“, Schröder added.

The DFB feels happy about presenting Gerhard Schröder as patron of the tournament which marks a fundamental step on the way to the FIFA World Championship in 2006. „With his decision to accept the patronage of the European Under 21-Championship Gerhard Schröder once more demonstrated to be a true friend of football. His acceptance additionally sanitises the public image of the tournament“, Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, president of the DFB, emphasises.
