U-20s versus China: The next step to the quarter-finals

Recovery is the first priority for Germany’s U-20 women ahead of their second group match against China at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada on Saturday (live on Eurosport from 01:00 CET). Maren Meinert’s charges have had just two days to prepare for their encounter with the Asian side at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium after making the perfect start to their campaign with a 2-0 win over defending champions and joint favourites USA.

The Chinese made their mark in their first match by earning a 1-1 draw against Brazil. Among those present in the stadium were Meinert and her assistant coach Bettina Wiegmann, who gained some valuable impressions during the game. "I was very impressed by China, so we’re going to have to give it our all again", said the 41-year-old, who gave her players the morning off on Wednesday to visit the world’s largest shopping centre on Edmonton’s outskirts.

China: Controlled, quick, athletic – and well organised

After this welcome change of pace, the team once again turned their full attention to their next World Cup tie, where they will face a captivating Asian team with more than just ball control, pace and good organisation in their credit column. "They’ve also significantly improved their athleticism and physicality over the past few years", Meinert explained. "That’s why I hope we can hold firm against them and fight like we did against the USA."

Having played the full 90 minutes against USA, SV Meppen midfielder Rieke Dieckmann knows what her team are up against: "Just as we did against the USA, we’ve got to play as a team, never let up and be ever-present in the game."

After their match against China, the Germany squad will leave Edmonton and travel to Montreal, where they will play their final group match against Brazil at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday (live on Eurosport from 22:00 CET).
