Germany’s U-20 women have secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada. Coach Maren Meinert’s team posted a 5-1 win over Brazil in their final group match in Montreal after an impressive second-half display.

Having won the group with seven points, Die Nationalelf will now face hosts Canada in the first knockout round. The match kicks off in Edmonton at 02:00 CET on Sunday and will be broadcast live on Eurosport. USA defeated China 3-0 to finish second in the group and move into the last eight.

After going behind in the first half to a somewhat unfortunate goal, a hat-trick from Sara Däbritz and a brace from Pauline Bremer turned the match emphatically in Germany’s favour after half-time. What is more, moments before the break, Bremer even missed a penalty that would have drawn her side level.

A turbulent end to the first half

Entering their last match in Group B with just one point to their name, the Brazilians made a brisk start. Forced to defend, Germany’s back line held firm, in contrast to during the tumultuous 5-5 draw with China four days earlier.

Maren Meinert made just one change to the previous starting line-up, with Merle Frohms replacing Meike Kämper in goal. Felicitas Rauch, Margarita Gidion, Rebecca Knaak and Manjou Wilde once again took up their places in the back four while senior European Championship winner Sara Däbritz lined up in midfield alongside Rieke Dieckmann, captain Lina Magull and Theresa Panfil to supply strikers Lena Petermann and Pauline Bremer with goalscoring opportunities.

This tactical approach appeared to pay off. After some initial difficulties, Germany’s U-20 women pushed forward consistently from a well organised defence and created several good chances to take the lead. Bremer and Panfil had the best of these opportunities but narrowly missed the target.

As the first half wore on, A Seleção generated chances of their own, with Gabi firing wide on two occasions before the match entered a chaotic new phase. In the 41st minute, Brazil took a surprise lead from a corner when Carol scored, but Germany continued to push forward and won a penalty after Camila’s foul on Bremer in the 45th minute. The striker stepped up to take the spot-kick herself but her effort struck the post as the first half entered injury time.

Däbritz and Bremer turn the match around

Maren Meinert’s team refused to be deterred by this double blow before the break, and just five minutes after the restart, Sara Däbritz scored a much-celebrated equaliser. In the 64th minute, up popped Bremer to put Germany ahead with a hugely impressive effort, winning possession in the centre circle before dribbling past the defence and goalkeeper and slotting the ball into the net.

As the match entered its closing stages, the 18-year-old had a chance to give her team a two-goal lead, but Brazil’s formidable goalkeeper Leticia parried the shot clear. Däbritz secured the three points for Germany in the 78th minute before making the score 4-1 in injury time – her fourth and fifth goals of the tournament. Pauline Bremer managed to strike again in the dying seconds as the game finished 5-1.
