U-20 women: Brazil stand between Germany and quarter-finals

Germany’s U-20 women play Brazil in their final group match at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada tonight (live on Eurosport from 22:00 CET) for a place in the quarter-finals. Die Nationalelf currently lead Group A with four points, ahead of USA on three points, China on two and Brazil with one.

Coach Maren Meinert understands the difficulty of the task awaiting her players, warning: "Brazil are a very tough team to play, with extremely talented individual players who will always look to take on their opponent," the 41-year-old said. "They have a technically adept midfield and defenders capable of robust tackling. They tend to keep things tight and have always delivered solid performances here at the World Cup."

Meinert: "We've got to be patient"

Meinert has a full complement of players to choose from after Germany’s 2-0 win over USA and 5-5 draw with China. Tonight’s match at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium will pose a particular challenge for a young team that includes defender Joelle Wedemeyer, who is celebrating her 18th birthday on Tuesday.

"Brazil really slow play down for their opponents; they play a very patient game," Meinert said. "The challenge will be to keep our patience while still pushing forward and refusing to allow ourselves to be lulled into a more sedate tempo."
