U 17 reach World Cup semis after 10-year wait

Germany’s U 17 national team has advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup in Korea. The team, which is coached by former Champions-League-winner Heiko Herrlich, defeated England 4-1 (0-0) on Sunday. Germany face Nigeria in the semifinals on Thursday (12 noon, live on Eurosport). The Africans had eliminated Argentina from the tournament with a 2-0 (2-0) victory.

For the first time since 1997, Germany’s U 17 manage to advance to the semifinals of a World Cup. Under Herrlich’s reign, who took over for Paul Schomann following the fifth place finish at the European Championship in May, the team has been undefeated for the last six games, culminating in the 4-1 win over England.

“As winners of the Africa Cup, Nigeria are favorites in our semifinal on Thursday. At the same time, we feel very confident right now. We’ll be prepared for Nigeria on Thursday. We are much too ambitious to be content with reaching the semifinal”, said Herrlich.

Following the win over England, Germany’s delegation moved from Goyang to Suwon, where they will play their upcoming game. During the two-hour bus ride, Herrlich had his players watch a DVD of the 4-1 triumph over England. Leverkusen’s Richard Sukuta-Pasu had given Germany a comfortable 2-0 lead early in the second half of that game, scoring his fourth goal of the tournament, while team-captain Tony Kroos made the final goal (87.) to give Germany a convincing 4-1 win.

DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger called the victorious team following the England-game, congratulation Herrlich and his team for reaching the World Cup semifinal. “These results speak volumes about our new coach Heiko Herrlich. We did not give him much time to prepare for the challenge, yet his team is playing a great tournament”, said Zwanziger.
