U-17 girls begin World Cup with 2-2 draw against Canada

Germany’s U-17 girls began their campaign at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica with a draw against Canada. Coach Anouschka Bernhard’s team came back from a 2-0 deficit at half-time to finish 2-2, with Nina Ehegötz and Kim Fellhauer scoring within three minutes of each other to avoid opening the tournament with a defeat.

"Of course, we’re a little disappointed to draw 2-2. We would have liked things to go differently, but had to deal with a very strong Canada performance. On the other hand, we responded well to going 2-0 down, so ultimately we’re satisfied with the result", explained Bernhard.

At the Estadio Edgardo Baltodano Briceño in Liberia, Germany fell behind in the third minute, after Canada captain Jessie Fleming put her free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net to give the Group B rivals the lead. Coach Beverly Priestman’s side doubled their lead through Marie Levasseur’s goal shortly before the break.

Ehegötz and Fellhauer score for Germany

In the second half, the reigning European champions got on the scoresheet in front of 2,910 spectators in the 65th minute, after Güterloh’s Nina Ehegötz rifled Saskia Meier’s pass home. Before the Canadians could draw breath, Kim Fellhauer of 1. FC Saarbrücken put Germany on level terms with a headed goal from a corner, despite the loss of captain Jasmin Sehan with concussion just a couple of minutes earlier.

Germany’s next opponents in the group stages are Ghana, who finished third at the U-17 Women’s World Cup 2012 in Azerbaijan, and North Korea, finished runners-up two years ago.
