TSG first Bundesliga casualty in the DFB Cup

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have become the first club to be knocked out of the DFB Cup after going down 2-0 to second-tier side 1860 München. All the other six Bundesliga clubs that played their first-round fixtures on Saturday secured their place in the next round.

Despite the inclusion of Germany U21 international Kevin Volland and ex-Germany international Kevin Kuranyi, the Bundesliga side simply couldn’t get going against a team that narrowly avoided relegation to the 3. Liga last season. 1860 München put in a very good performance and fully deserved their lead, given to them in the 51st minute by Daylon Claasen. Substitute Fejsal Mulic then finished off Hoffenheim with a goal in added time.

The other six Bundesliga teams in action on Saturday afternoon made it through their DFB Cup first-round fixtures with ease. Schalke 04 thrashed second-division MSV Duisberg 5-0, and VfL Wolfsberg looked equally as convincing in their 4-1 victory over third-division Stuttgart Kickers, whilst 1. FC Köln beat Regionalliga side SV Meppen 4-0. Bayer Leverkusen also cruised through their tie against Sportfreunden Lotte 3-0 and Eintracht Frankfurt won by the same scoreline against fifth-division team Bremer SV. The only side who looked like they might struggle to progress were Werder Bremen, who needed extra time to come through against third-division side Würzburger Kickers, eventually coming out 2-0 winners.

Two out of the three second-division teams in action on Saturday afternoon failed to progress. SpVgg Greuther Fürth lost 1-0 at home to third-division FC Erzgebirge Aue and Regionalliga side Viktoria Köln came from behind to beat Union Berlin 2-1. The only second-tier team to qualify was Eintracht Braunschweig, who beat third-division Hallescher FC 1-0.

Early goals for Wolfsberg, Schalke and Köln

Germany international Max Kruse headed Wolfsberg in front against Stuttgart Kickers in just the fourth minute of the match, and Bas Dost made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time. Immediately after the restart, Kevin de Bruyne all but secured the victory with Wolfsberg’s third, and whilst Stuttgart pulled back a consolation goal through Lhadji Badiane, Nicklas Bendtner restored Wolfsberg’s three-goal lead with five minutes to go.

It was also the fourth minute of the match when Schalke celebrated the first goal of their derby match against MSV Duisberg. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finished from close range, before two goals just before half-time from a Matija Nastasic header and a fantastic Johannes Geis free kick put Schalke firmly in control going into the break. Franco Di Santo had missed a penalty for his new side midway through the first half, the awarding of which resulted in Duisberg’s Branimir Bajic seeing red. Di Santo was however able to make up for his earlier miss after the break, celebrating his first goal in Schalke colours 20 minutes after half-time. Leon Goretzka then rounded off the rout five minutes from the final whistle.

Köln opened the scoring even earlier than their Bundesliga counterparts in their game against SV Meppen; Anthony Medeste scored after less than a minute, and doubled his tally from the spot just before the half-hour mark. Meppen’s keeper Benjamin Gommert was also shown red for conceding the penalty after he brought down Pavel Olkowski in the box. Medeste then completed his hat-trick ten minutes from time before Simon Zoller rounded off an excellent performance from the Bundesliga side.

Effortless wins for Leverkusen and Frankfurt

Germany international Stefan Kießling opened the scoring for Leverkusen in the 15th minute of their encounter in Lotte, when he converted a Wendell cross from close range. Hakan Calhanoglu grabbed the Bundesliga side’s second from the spot – and Leverkusen’s third also came from a penalty which was converted by Lars Bender.

Eintracht Frankfurt had to wait until the 31st minute to get their first goal of the game in Bremen – Luc Castaignos opened the scoring which gave the Bundesliga side full control of the game. Stefan Aigner and Luca Waldschmidt scored in the second half to put the game beyond all doubt.

SV Werder Bremen, however, struggled in their first round encounter – Viktor Skripnik’s side failed to create any real chances in normal time against third-division team Würzburger Kickers. Anthony Ujah was the man to eventually break the deadlock for Werder in the 102nd minute, and his striker partner Fin Bartels doubled their lead shortly after to save Werder’s blushes and send them into the next round.

Viktoria turned it around

The game remained deadlocked in Aue until Simon Skarlatidis headed FC Erzgebirge Aue in front in the 68th minute with what proved to be the decisive goal against SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

The visitors from Union Berlin took the lead against Viktoria Köln shortly before half-time through Collin Quaner. Damir Kreilach had the chance to double Union’s lead just after the break from the spot, but struck his penalty against the post. Mike Wunderlich got Viktoria Köln back in the game with 20 minutes to go, before Jules Reimerink completed the excellent comeback five minutes later.

Hallescher FC created some good chances against Eintracht Braunschweig, but to no avail – the second-division side secured a place in next week’s second-round draw with a goal from substitute Hendrick Zuck.
