TSG avoid first DFB Pokal upset

TSG Hoffenheim become the ninth Bundesliga side to qualify for the second round of the DFB Pokal, avoiding the first upset of the competition in Erfurt on Saturday evening. TSG made hard work of their encounter in the Steigerwaldstadion against a tactically well-organised Rot-Weiß-Erfurt team. It took the favourites until the second half to deliver the goods: U21 European Champion Nadiem Amiri beat the keeper at the near post to put his team ahead. Andrej Kramaric passed up a wonderful opportunity to double their lead, but Julian Nagelsmann’s men saw the game out comfortably in the end.

Late drama as Jahn Regensburg progress

Regensburg appeared to have wasted their opportunity to knock-out their fellow 2. Bundesliga opponents SV Darmstadt when Andreas Geipl blazed his penalty over the bar, and Sobiech soon after put the visitors in front. However, the newly-promoted side were thrown a lifeline in the form of another penalty, with which Marc Lais made no mistake. In the closing stages of the game, Jonas Nietfeld headed Regensburg into the lead, with Grüttner making it 3-1 and sealing the deal in stoppage time.

Fortuna Düsseldorf can celebrate thanks to Hennings’ brace

Bielefeld and Düsseldorf could not be separated after ninety minutes. In the first half, good chances were few and far between. Fortuna Düsseldorf made the better start to the second half, but Kujovic wasted a golden one-on-one opportunity. Bielefeld then went on the attack, and whilst Düsseldorf’s keeper Michael Rensing made a good save to deny Andreas Voglsammer, he couldn’t keep out Fabian Klos’ strike in the 55th minute, making it 1-0 to Bielefeld. Just over ten minutes later however, substitute Rouwen Hennings found the back of the net to level the scores. In extra time Hennings then scored again, before the game was sealed by an Oliver Fink strike in the 120th minute.

Werder Bremen win comfortably in Würzburg

Bundesliga side Werder Bremen have progressed to the second round of the DFB-Pokal after beating Würzburger Kickers 3-0 on Saturday evening. In the first half Werder lacked concentration, whilst Kickers defended well and looked to hurt their opposition on the counter. However, shortly after the break, Milos Veljkovic broke the deadlock with a bizarre goal from out wide on the left flank. Werder then went on the offensive, and whilst Kickers did not give up, it was only a matter of time before the Green-Whites widened the margin. Max Kruse doubled their lead with a good header, before Maximilian Eggestein put the match to bed, making it 3-0 in the 77th minute.
