Tricky away tasks for top three

We’re approaching the final stretch of the 2014/15 Bundesliga season and the table is starting to take shape. Matchday 24 kicks off tonight with the relegation six-pointer between VfB Stuttgart and Hertha BSC, however, there is plenty more action this weekend which will help shape the final standings. Five games will be taking place tomorrow afternoon (15:30 CET), one in the evening (18:30 CET), whilst there will be two games on Sunday. Runaway leaders Bayern travel to Hannover, however, the most interesting clash of the weekend takes place in the SGL Arena on Saturday where second place Wolfsburg travel to Augsburg.

Both sides have European aspirations. Wolfsburg are on the hunt for a Champions League spot, whereas the hosts are hoping to clinch Europa League qualification, having impressed so far this season. Despite impressing, their charge has faltered of late and they lasted tasted victory in Dortmund on matchday 19. Their strong start to the season means that European qualification is still on the cards and the fighting spirit shown against Leverkusen in their last home match, in which goalkeeper Marwin Hitz scored a last second leveller, should stand them in good stead. Wolfsburg will be a tough nut to crack though, having won their last four Bundesliga games.

Two thirds of the season have been played, so the table is taking shape. Four further matches kick-off at 15:30 CET. Schalke 04 will be hoping to strengthen their European credentials at home to TSG Hoffenheim, who will be buoyed by progression to the quarter finals of the DFB Cup. Struggling Freiburg face Werder Bremen. Christian Streich’s side are currently in the relegation zone, but midweek cup success over Köln should increase confidence. Bremen were humbled by Arminia Bielefeld in the DFB Cup, so will be hoping to bounce back against SCF. Hannover 96 are yet to taste victory this year and face a difficult task on Saturday when record champions Bayern München come to town. The Bavarians started the year slowly but are back in their stride having scored 20 goals in their last four league games. The final afternoon game sees Hamburger SV host Borussia Dortmund, who will be hoping to continue their good form and maintain their late dash for a European place with victory over a side who are just two points clear of the relegation zone.

Saturday’s evening match (18:30 CET) sees Borussia Mönchengladbach, who have picked up seven points from their last three Bundesliga games, travel to 1. FSV Mainz 05. Sunday’s fixtures see Köln host Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen visit Paderborn.
