Tough test against Spain in opener

The DFB Women’s U19s will have their first match of the European U19 Championship in Slovakia today. Maren Meinert’s team will be coming up against one of the strongest teams in tournament when they play Spain in their first group game at 18:00 CEST.

Spain have made it to the finals three times in the past four years but winning the European U19 Championship has always been a step too far. Meinert knows how strong their opponents will be: “The Spanish are good technically and very tough. They have really good combination play going forwards and are well organised defensively.”

The statistics are in Germany’s favour: the DFB women’s U19s have won five out of the last six encounters with Spain. Nina Ehegötz, who was a part of the squad in Israel at the European Championship in 2015, is optimistic: “We managed to beat Spain 1-0 in the group stage last year and we want to repeat that in Slovakia.”

Germany will face Switzerland (22nd July, 18:00 CEST) and Austria (25th July, 18:00 CEST) in their other group matches. The top two teams in the group will qualify for the semi-finals which will take place on the 28th July. The final will be played on 31st July in Senec.
