Tough night for Bayern in Portugal

FC Porto beat FC Bayern München 3-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter final in Portgual this evening. Errors from Xabi Alonso, Dante and Jerome Boateng resulted in the three goals; the second-leg takes place in the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Ricardo Quaresma’s early brace (3’ & 10’) put Porto on the path to success and although Thiago got one back in the 28th minute, Jackson Martinez restored their two goal advantage with 25 minutes left on the clock. The defeat was Bayern’s first on Portuguese soil and means that the hosts remain unbeaten in the Champions League this season.

Stunning start for the hosts

The majority of the 50,092 supporters in the Estadio Dragao were celebrating inside two minutes. Xabi Alonso lost possession too easily on the edge of the box and Manuel Neuer brought down the onrushing Martinez. The goalkeeper was booked for his troubles and then sent the wrong way by Quaresma’s penalty.

The winger got his second of the game eight minutes later. Dante lost the ball inside his own half, which allowed the Portugal international the chance to double the lead, which he took in a stylish manner. Bayern were shell-shocked but were handed a lifeline shortly before the half hour mark. Jerome Boateng’s cross was swept home at the far post by Thiago. The two goal advantage was almost restored before the break but Alex Sandro clipped the bar with a cross.

The situation didn’t improve for the Bavarians after the break. Porto remained the bigger threat and extended their lead through Martinez, who rounded Neuer and coolly slotted home after an error from Boateng. It could have been worse for Bayern but Neuer made a fantastic save to prevent the defender from scoring an own goal.
