Timo Werner to miss international fixtures

Timo Werner will sit out of the World Cup qualification games against Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan. According to his club RB Leipzig, the 21-year-old is suffering from a neck muscle injury and will miss the matches in Belfast on Thursday and in Kaiserslautern, Germany on Sunday as a result (both kick-offs 20:45 CEST). The forward also missed RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga game in Cologne on Sunday for the same reason.

Germany head coach Joachim Löw has forgone giving a late call-up to anyone, so Die Mannschaft will travel to Belfast with 22 players. As well as Werner, Löw will also miss the services of captain Manuel Neuer, Jonas Hector, Mario Gomez, Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira. A draw or better in Northern Ireland will give Germany a ticket to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
