Timo Werner shines in Leipzig’s UCL win

There were mixed fortunes for the Bundesliga sides in Champions League action on the first night of UCL Matchday 5. While RB Leipzig cruised to a 4-1 away victory over AS Monaco on the back of a Timo Werner brace, Borussia Dortmund were defeated by English side Tottenham Hotspur 2-1, despite holding on to a 1-0 lead going into the half time break.

Leipzig clear winners in Monaco

After struggling in recent Champions League games, RB Leipzig got back on track on Tuesday evening by beating Monaco 4-1. It was a comfortable ride by the time the second half rolled around, with no goals being scored in the second period of play. Germany international Timo Werner scored two goals, while Naby Keita and a Jemerson own goal added to Monaco’s night to forget. Jemerson was again at fault for Werner’s first goal after he gave the ball away to Kevin Kampl, who played in Werner to finish the chance off ruthlessly. Werner’s second came from the penalty spot. After tonight, Werner has scored 15 goals in 21 games for club and country.

This now leaves Leipzig level on seven points with FC Porto in Group G, meaning it’s all to play for on Matchday 6. Leipzig will face group leaders Besiktas, while Porto are in line to play Monaco.

Dortmund’s poor campaign continues

Things didn’t go so well for the other German side in UCL action on Tuesday night. Borussia Dortmund tasted defeat at the hands of group leaders Tottenham Hotspur at home. It’s yet another in a string of disappointing results for Peter Bosz’s side. Things started well for Dortmund, after the ever dangerous Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave the home side a 1-0 lead. It wouldn’t stay that way for long, however, as the equally threatening Harry Kane brought things level, before Heung-Min Son put the north London side in front.

It is now mathematically impossible for Dortmund to progress to the last 16, meaning they are resigned to fight it out for a Europa League spot on the final Matchday. They are currently in third place in Group G with 2 points along with APOEL Nicosia, who trail only on goal difference.
