Time for Freiburg to vanquish Schwarzwald-Stadion struggles against Dresden

A home tie against a Bundesliga II side – it could’ve been a trickier draw for SC Freiburg. They host Dynamo Dresden in the second round at 20:45 CEST. All the same, that the match at the Schwarzwald-Stadion is not a foregone conclusion, is clear from the experience of last season.

Indeed, the conditions were exactly the same last season when Freiburg were knocked out on penalties (6:7) by second-tier side, SV Sandhausen. In 2014/15, Christian Streich’s team were knocked out 3-0, again at home, by FC Augsburg. “We’re pleased to be playing at home,” said Jochen Saier, Freiburg’s chairman, after the draw. “We’re looking forward to an exciting match.”

Dynamo: only one quarter-final in 22 years

The only time Dynamo have reached the quarter-finals in the past 22 years was in 2014/15. Back in 1993/94 though, the team from Saxony made the semis, but got knocked out 2-1 by eventual winners, Werder Bremen. “We go in as the underdogs, but we know we have a chance,” said sporting director, Ralf Minge. Dynamo have won twice on the road in the league already this season.

Both sides had tricky encounters in the first round. SC Freiburg defeated Regionalliga side Germania Halberstadt 2-1 after a tough battle, while Dynamo overcame Viertliga side TuS Koblenz 3-2 in Zwickau.
