Three way battle for the title: Can Wolfsburg defend their crown?

The situation at both the top and the bottom of the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga hasn’t been this dramatic in years. It’s looking like the winners of the title and the sides to get relegated will be decided on the final game of the season. Who has what chances? Who’s going for the title? Who looks like going down? DFB.de takes a look at the most important questions with three games to go.

Three way battle for the title

Defending champions VfL Wolfsburg (48 points), Bayern München (47 points) and 1. FFC Frankfurt (46 points) all have hopes of winning the title. Due to their Champions League semi-finals at the weekend, Wolfsburg (14:00 CEST) and Frankfurt (17:00 CEST) will both play in the league today against Herforder SV and SC Freiburg respectively.

Wolfsburg have the title in their own hands and would finish top with three wins from their last three games. However, that won’t be easy looking at their remaining fixtures. They should get past Herforder but they then have a game against SGS Essen before a huge game to round off the season against 1. FFC Frankfurt.

Any slip up from Wolfsburg could be taken advantage of by FC Bayern München, especially when you consider that they should win their last three games against Jena, Herforder and Essen. Frankfurt still have a chance of winning the title should FC Bayern falter but they have to win their games against Freiburg, Hoffenheim and then Wolfsburg on the final day. It’s possible but it’s the least likely to happen. However, Frankfurt are on a good run and have won their last seven games. Colin Bell’s side also haven’t dropped a single point in 2015.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that second place is also very important as it means qualification for the Champions League. Fourth placed Turbine Potsdam have an outside chance of finishing in the top two (43 points).

Three sides in relegation battle

One of MSV Duisburg (12 points), SC Sand (14 points) and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (16 points) will join already relgated Herforder SV (5 points) in the 2. Women’s Bundesliga next season. The situation could become even more interesting at the weekend when MSV Duisburg take on SC Sand. Inka Grings and her MSV side could overtake Sand with a win on Sunday (11:00 CEST). Duisburg’s final two games are both winnable against Jena and Herforder, with six points out of nine almost certain to secure survival.

SC Sand could take a huge step towards survival if they beat Duisburg. However, a defeat could have ramifications, with games against Potsdam and relegation threatened Leverkusen to come. A win for Duisburg against Sand and a defeat against Potsdam would be unexpected for a Leverkusen side in the thick of a relegation battle. Thomas Obliers’ side round their season off against Freiburg and Sand, which could decide things at the bottom of the table.
