Thomas Müller: “It’s a huge disappointment”

Following Bayern München’s elimination from the Champions League, World Champion Thomas Müller spoke about the disappointing failure, his missed penalty and the upcoming challenges.

Bayern München managed to win 2-1 in the second leg of their tie with Atlético Madrid but it wasn’t enough to book their place in the final of the Champions League. It was the record Bundesliga winners’ third consecutive semi-final exit from the competition.

Question: Mr Müller, does it hurt more this year to be eliminated at this stage of the competition than in 2014 and 2015 as you were by far the better side?

Thomas Müller: Yeah, it’s a huge disappointment. There wasn’t much that we can blame except for possibly a couple of situations. I obviously should have converted my penalty, it was a massive opportunity. We also didn’t deal particularly well when they scored. We played a very good game, were extremely active and all played well individually.

Question: And your opponents didn’t offer much.

Müller: Atlético didn’t turn up. It is sometimes disappointing the type of football that can win against a much better team. We really did everything you need to do in football.

Question: What do you mean exactly?

Müller: We didn’t only play a good passing and positional game, we also had intensity, passion and outstanding fans who supported us. Shame it wasn’t enough.

Question: Can you understand why chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was worked up about the referee?

Müller: We don’t need to talk about the referee right now. With a bit of luck or a bit less misfortune we could have made it through.

Question: What can you take away from this evening?

Müller: Everyone saw what happened. We shouldn’t beat ourselves up about it. Nevertheless, we are out and it is a bitter pill to swallow.

Question: Bayern can win the Bundesliga on Saturday for the 21st time. How can you continue to build on these achievements?

Müller: At the moment we are just looking at securing this next title win first and foremost.
