Thomas Müller: "It was a victory of minds"

Müller: Well, FC Bayern created almost no chances in the first half. And that’s not what we want, nor is it our intention. But we took the lead and then had to be aware after the break that we had a one-goal lead and it isn’t ‘that’ much. The three points show up in the table. That’s a fact. Therefore no one else should question if we’ll do the same next Saturday.

Question: Bayern produced just eight shots on goal with there being just four real chances. Too few, no?

Müller: Of course we would have liked to score the second, third, fourth goal but we also had to have the mentality of saying ‘now we’re defending by hook and brook.’ We really dug in at the back. Everyone ran that extra two metres more. I had the feeling that everyone in the side knew what we had to do and that was to win this game.

Question: It feels good to win again, right?

Müller: Yeah, it’s been a long time since out last win. We played against a team competing in the Champions League with ten men for 70 minutes and got a draw out of it. And the game before that was a bit poor.

Question: Does the team really have to just work on confidence?

Müller: We have confidence. But of course not everything goes to plan and fits into place at a time like this, not everything goes as you’d like it to. And we have to work on that game to game. Then every individual can get back to form.

Question: It seems that FC Bayern can call on a performance at the push of a button at the moment .

Thomas Müller spoke on the performance against VfB Stuttgart, problems after the winter break and his side’s goals following FC Bayern München’s first win in 2015. DFB.de caught up with the Bayern striker.

Question: Mr. Müller, you won 2-0 in Stuttgart. FC Bayern München’s first win in 2015 was an efficient victory, right?

Thomas Müller: Stuttgart played superbly in the first half. We had a few problems getting behind the VfB midfield and didn’t have a chance until Arjen’s goal. That’s of course not what we want.

Question: But that wasn’t a performance worthy of winning a championship.

Müller: I maintain that it was a victory of minds, which the club has done for decades. We just concentrated on what was important – taking all three points. We also took the lead against Schalke but didn’t let it slip today. We all knew that we had to be on our toes to get the result – even after the opener.

Question: When will the increase in performance come? Where is the ease that you showed before the winter break?

Müller: We’re currently in the process of finding ourselves, we’re not playing brilliantly but that we’re getting into the top form that we were in before the winter break. Now it’s about winning games and we did just that impeccably today.

Question: What’s missing on the pitch compared to before the winter break for FC Bayern?

Müller: Well, FC Bayern created almost no chances in the first half. And that’s not what we want, nor is it our intention. But we took the lead and then had to be aware after the break that we had a one-goal lead and it isn’t ‘that’ much. The three points show up in the table. That’s a fact. Question: It seems that FC Bayern can call on a performance at the push of a button at the moment .

Müller: You‘ve also seen in other leagues that some teams have problems after a short break like this. Real Madrid have lost two games on the spin now. It’s a bit strange and hard to explain. With us, Wolfsburg hit us on the counter in the first game after the winter break, we played with too little protection and went completely to the dogs. It maybe so that not every player is in top shape and they’d like to put in the right performance. Arjen is doing well but more has to come from a few others.

Question: What did you make of sitting on the bench from the start in this match?

Müller: Someone always has to sit out for us and a game lasts longer than 45 minutes.
