Thomas Müller: "I'm really frustrated"

After FC Bayern München’s fairly uninspiring performance in their 1-1 draw with TSG Hoffenheim, something of a crisis atmosphere has broken out at Säbener Street despite Bayern retaining top spot. Thomas Müller had a great opportunity to grab a winner in the closing stages from Kingsley Coman’s build-up, but luck was not on the world champion’s side. In an interview with DFB.de, the 27-year-old spoke about the missed chances, the atmosphere in the team and the upcoming pair of international matches.

Question: What did you make of the 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim?

Thomas Müller: Obviously we’re not happy. We were probably a bit too relaxed in the early stages of the first half, but we stepped our level up significantly, put on a lot of pressure, especially at the start of the second half, and created a few good chances. Then we started playing an even more attacking game.

Question: Is that why Hoffenheim were able to do more on the counter?

Müller: The game was a bit too hectic, but obviously we wanted to get the win. We had a couple of really good chances right at the end, but Mats [Hummels] hit the post, and then I did as well with that great opportunity. That’s certainly what it felt like anyway.

Question: What happened in that situation?

Müller: It might not have been an open goal, but unfortunately the ball hit the post, and I’m really frustrated. There’s a bit of a monkey on my back at the moment. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you constantly think about these things, but I was in a really bad mood right after the game.

Question: Would you rather have been brought on sooner?

Question: Would you rather have been brought on sooner?

Müller: That’s not for us to discuss. We are a team, and there are more than just eleven players, so questions like that are not helpful - they just create problems and don’t help us stay together. We didn’t win, and the mood after the game reflects that.

Question: Are the upcoming international games against San Marino and Italy, and the visit to see the Pope, coming at just the right time for you then?

Müller: We’ve got an international break now, which starts off on Wednesday, so we can start mentally preparing for that on Tuesday evening. Until then, we’ve got to focus on putting this result behind us.
