Third win: Germany into final 16 as group winners

The Germany U20 national team managed to pull off another impressive victory in their third group game of the World Cup in New Zealand. DFB-Team head coach Frank Wormuth’s side qualify for the final 16 as group winners courtesy of a 5-1 win over Honduras at the Christchurch Stadium, the venue where they will also take on African Champions Nigeria in the round of 16. The Nigerians secured their place in the knockouts by clinching second spot behind Brazil with a 2-0 success over Hungary.

“I’m very proud of the team again. The game was more difficult than we predicted as Honduras were strong in the tackle. But my players took on board on the challenge and in particular, when we had more room, played good football in attack,” Wormuth raved over his side’s impressive performance yet again and drew a positive conclusion from the group stages: “I’m very happy, all three games were of a very high level.”

Stendera opens goalfest

The German youngsters made a made-to-measure start to the game. After Levin Öztunali was felled in the box, Marc Stendera gave Germany the lead after just two minutes, converting the resulting penalty. But the Hondurans came back and there was a bit of luck about it, when Bryan Rochez’s shot cannoned off the post and onto the back of Germany keeper Marvin Schwäbe to level it 1-1 in the 19th minute.

After Stendera had put the DFB-Team ahead, Julian Brandt restored the lead before the interval. The Bayer Leverkusen forward spectacularly loving goalkeeper Roberto Lopez to make it 2-1. Hany Mukhtar increased Germany’s lead shortly after the break directly from a free kick, before Grischa Prömel with a low shot and Niklas Stark with a tap in secured all three points for Germany.
