The World Cup is over and done with

The World Cup has been reviewed and analysed down to a tee, conclusions have been drawn and important lessons for the future have been learned. The women’s national team will now turn their attention to the upcoming qualification for UEFA European Championship 2017 and the Olympic games in Rio 2016, for which they qualified through the World Cup in Canada.

National coach Silvia Neid has called up 21 players for the games against Hungary (Friday 16:00 CEST) and Croatia (Tuesday 18:00 CEST). Three players have been given their first ever call up: Sara Doorsoun-Khajeh of SGS Essen, Rebecca Knaak of Bayer Leverksuen and Kristin Demann of Hoffenheim. Wolfsburg player Anna Blässe will remain in the squad, but Babett Peter, Josephine Henning, Lena Lotzen, Jennifer Cramer and Dzsenifer Marozsan all miss out through injury.

Angerer’s goalie gloves passed down to Schult

After the retirement of team captain Nadine Angerer and Célia Šašic, there are questions regarding their positions. The goalkeeper to fill the vacant position between the sticks is DFB Cup winner Almuth Schult and the new captain will be named soon. Schult is excited by her new role in the team. "It’s a great feeling and I’m very proud of myself. I’ve dreamed of this moment ever since I began playing football. But this is no time to relax; I need to prove to the manager that I deserve this spot."

The head coach has warned her team to have vigilance in the run up to the game against Hungary. "Despite the clear gulf in class between these two teams, we will treat them with respect and are focused on the task ahead," said Silvia Neid, who will line up beside assistants Ulrike Ballweg and Steffi Jones. "We want to finish top of our group, and to do so we will need to be passionate, creative and committed. That will be our approach in the first game."

Russia and Turkey join Germany, Hungary and Croatia in group 5. The group winners and the best six second place finishers will qualify automatically for the European Championship finals. The two other second place finishers will battle it out in a play-off between 17th and 25th October. Until then, Germany will be hoping for a perfect record.
