The Germany U21s have won their second European Championship qualifier. The reigning European champions beat Azerbaijan 6-1 in the Friendship Stadium in Cottbus. Philipp Ochs (8’ and 37’) scored twice on his debut and Cedric Teuchert netted on his first appearance (83’). Mahmoud Dahoud (34’) and Marcel Hartel (72’) also got on the scoresheet with the remaining Germany goal courtesy of an Anton Kriwotsjuk own goal (53’). Ilyas Safarzade grabbed a consolation for the visitors (86’).
“We were much better today in a lot of areas compared to against Kosovo,” Coach Stefan Kuntz said. “We were a bit inconsistent with our finishing but the performance as a whole was brilliant”. Captain Jonathan Tah added, “We played really well today. There are one or two things for us to work on but it was definitely a step in the right direction”.
Ochs grabs a brace, Teuchert adds the gloss
The German youngsters started extremely well, created chance after chance and Ochs fired them deservedly into an early lead. Playmaker Dahoud doubled their lead in the 34th minute with a shot from the edge of the box. And Ochs scored his second of the match just three minutes later.
The game became even more one-sided after the break and it became more a case of the German attackers versus the Azerbaijan keeper Mustafa Ozhitay. The 21-year-old stopper was powerless from preventing his own player putting the ball past him nor could he prevent efforts from Hartel or Teuchert finding the net. Azerbaijan’s late consolation was the only blot on the Germany team’s copybook who otherwise put in a stellar performance.
