The skipper returns

He’s been knocking the ball around nicely in training, winning tackles and playing a key part in the squad and now he’s back. Atakan Akkaynak, the Germany captain, has completed his suspension and can feature in the tournament for the first time tonight against Bosnia-Herzegovina (17:00 CEST). Germany drew their opener 2-2 against Ukraine, whereas Bosnia were beaten 2-0 by Austria.

“We’ve analysed the first game now,” explained head coach Meikel Schönweitz. “We need to do better when we have chances and assert more dominance in the final third. We’ll need to be patient tonight though, as they defend well and will make life tough for us. We want to claim our first win of the competition tonight.”

Schönweitz has a full squad at his disposal

The final training session was a relatively relaxed affair, with only a few tactical ideas being worked on. The entire squad are available for tonight’s match. Bosnia-Herzegovina, who beat heavyweights Italy (1-0) and Georgia (2-1) in qualifying, are also at full strength.

“We want to put in a good performance and record a victory,” remarked Akkaynak. The Leverkusen midfielder is relieved to be available again: “Not being involved was difficult. It’s great to be back and to have the chance to play in the European Championship for the first time.”

1,000 spectators expected

Germany’s opening game took place in the vast 68,000-seat national stadium, but they’ll be playing in a cosier venue tonight. The Dalga Arena in Baku, which has a capacity of roughly 6,700, will host the match, with roughly 1,000 spectators expected to be in attendance.
