The DFB mourns the loss of Dettmar Cramer

The German Football Association (DFB) mourns the loss of Dettmar Cramer, who passed away in Reit im Winkl at the age of 90 on Thursday. “We have lost a great coach and a big personality,” said DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach. “Dettmar Cramer was a globally renowned ambassador for football. His expertise was appreciated by all who knew him, while he was also an endearing and caring person who lived life to the full. I have nothing but respect for his work.”

Cramer began his coaching career at Teutonia Lippstadt. He had spells at a handful of other clubs in Westphalia, before joining the Westphalia FA in 1948 and continued to work in Duisburg up until June 1963. After spending a short time in Japan, he returned to Germany in January 1964 and linked up with the DFB. He was assistant to head coach Helmut Schön at the 1966 World Cup in England together with Udo Lattek. Cramer’s most successful tenure came at FC Bayern München, who we led to two European Cups (1975 and 1976) and the 1976 Intercontinental Cup. He also coached Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen and Hertha BSC in Germany.

During his life, Dettmar Cramer worked in around 90 countries as a coach and trainer on behalf of the DFB and FIFA. His dedication to developing football also earned him two honorary degrees. In 2011, Cramer became the first coach to be given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the DFB.
