Champions League winners Barcelona with Germany international goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen have taken a huge step towards the semi-finals of the Spanish Cup. In the away leg of their Copa del Rey quarterfinal, the in-form Catalonians beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1. This gives them every chance of completing the job in the second leg at the Nou Camp next Wednesday.
Ter Stegen once again played a cup game from start to finish and kept the opposition out well. At the other end, academy forward Munir El Haddadi and Brazilian superstar Neymar scored Barcelona’s goal in the 18th and 24th minutes respectively. Aritz Aduriz kept Bilbao’s hopes of making the semi-final alive with a late goal in the 89th minute. Barcelona went into the game on the back of having just beaten Bilbao 6-0 in the league on Sunday. Neither Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi nor hat-trick hero from the weekend Luis Suarez were in the squad for Wednesday night’s cup tie.
Juventus without Khedira beat Klose’s Lazio
Juventus have already secured their place in the final four of the Italian Cup. The reigning champions of Italy came up against DFB record goalscorer Miroslav Klose in the quarterfinal of the Coppa Italia and won the game 1-0. The winning goal, scored by Stephan Lichtsteiner in the 66th minute, was awarded with the assistance of the "Hawk Eye" goal-line technology system.
