Ter Stegen: “I want to play league fixtures too”

Marc-André ter Stegen recently paid a visit to his former home, Borussia-Park. The Germany U21 keeper watched on as Mönchengladbach played SC Freiburg and spoke to the club’s TV channel Fohlen TV after the game. One of the topics he touched on was his situation at Barcelona. “Unfortunately, I haven’t played a league fixture yet, but I have played important matches in the Champions League and the Copa del Rey,” said the 22-year-old. “I’m getting game time, that’s the most important part.”

The keeper moved to the Catalan side last summer. “I can only try to build the pressure on Claudio Bravo (Chile international goalkeeper and Barcelona’s first choice for league fixtures) by performing well in training and then giving my all for the team when I get the opportunity to play. He is also doing a great job. Nevertheless, I want to play league fixtures,” explains ter Stegen. He would love for that to be the case on Sunday (21:00 CET), when Barca travel to Athletic Bilbao for matchday 22 in the Primera Division.

Communicating in Spanish with his teammates has become easier for ter Stegen. “I’m improving, that's something I'm realising day by day,” said the shot-stopper, who has big plans for this summer’s European Under-21 Championship in Czech Republic. “However, I’m not exactly fluent yet,” he admitted.

Ter Stegen praises his successor Sommer

After reaching the Spanish Cup semi-finals, ter Stegen visitied his mother in Mönchengladbach for her birthday and also paid a short visit to Borussia-Park. “It’s great to be back here,” he said. “I’m glad that the team clinched a well-deserved victory in the end. That was the second win after the winter break and I hope they can carry on like this.”

He was particularly impressed by his successor, Yann Sommer. “He's great! I can only congratulate Gladbach on signing him. He’s doing a tremendous job, the crowd love him and he seems to be a really nice guy. I feel like he fits in well at Gladbach.”
