Ter Stegen and Barca looking to retain top spot

While a host of Germany internationals will be in action in the Bundesliga this weekend, DFB.de takes a look abroad to highlight some of the other DFB Team players as they are set to head into their domestic fixtures.

Spain

Just three matchdays into the season, the Primera Division standings offer a familiar picture, with FC Barcelona and Real Madrid leading the way. Ter Stegen and Barca have managed a perfect start with three wins from three games, while Real Madrid and Toni Kroos are two points behind the pacemakers following a draw at Gijon on the opening matchday.

Shkodran Mustafi, the third German international currently playing in Spain, and his club FC Valencia are in eight place at the moment and take on Real Betis on Saturday (18:15 CEST) following their disappointing home defeat to Zenit St. Petersburg in the opening Champions League group-stage match. Toni Kroos and Real Madrid host FC Granada (16:00 CEST), while Ter Stegen and Barca will not be in action until Sunday, when they make the trip to Levante (20:30 CEST).

England

Saturday features a true top game in the Premier League, as Chelsea host Arsenal (13:45 CEST). Based on the current standings it might seem otherwise, as Chelsea are 17th at the moment and Arsenal fourth, but the London derby rarely disappoints, largely because of the rivalry between both teams' coaches Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger. Right in the midst of it all: Mesut Özil. The World Champion has recently been displaying good form for Arsenal and will look to keep it going against his former coach from his time at Real Madrid.

The other two Germany internationals will be in action on Sunday. Manchester United and Bastian Schweinsteiger are currently third in the standings and play at FC Southampton (17:00 CEST). Emre Can and Liverpool FC host Norwich City at the same time and will look to record their second win of the season, having only managed a scrappy start with one win, three draws and one defeat.

Italy

Juventus, usually a stalwart in Italian football and the club you would most likely expect to have a number one next to their name in the table. That much is true again this season in the Serie A, but unfortunately for the defending champions the number is allocated to the amount of points they've collected so far. Juve have suffered a very poor start with just one draw from three games and World Champion Sami Khedira is yet to make a competitive match appearance.

Khedira is still recovering from a muscle injury picked up in a friendly match with Olympique Marseille. The exact timing of his return is yet to be specified. Contrary to their domestic performances, Juventus set a real benchmark in the Champions League during the week, winning 2-1 on the road against Manchester City. They hope to follow up this impressive win with their first league victory of the season as they make a trip to FC Genoa on Sunday (15:00 CEST). Inter Milan are currently in first place with a perfect record from three games. On Sunday (12:30 CEST) they play at Chievo, who are currently in second place.

Turkey

Lukas Podolski (Galatasaray) and Mario Gomez (Besiktas) are the DFB representatives currently active in Turkey and have made a good impression after the opening four matchdays. Gomez and Besiktas are in third place following Gomez' first competitive goals for his new club in the 2-0 victory over Medipol Basaksehir last weekend. Andreas Beck was also involved for Besiktas. Their next game will be on Monday at Genclerbirligi Ankara (19:00 CEST), where Gomez and Co. will look to secure their next win.

Lukas Podolski will already have played by then. Like Gomez, Podolski has bagged two goals in four appearances in Turkey's SüperLig so far, but his team hasn't performed as well as they currently sit in eight place with just five points to their name. The pressure is already noticeable for Galatasaray as they take on second-placed Trabzonspor on Saturday (19:00 CEST).
