Super sub Islacker fires Frankfurt to Champions League title

Mandy Islacker scored a last minute winner to fire 1. FFC Frankfurt to their fourth women’s Champions League title following wins in 2002, 2006 and 2008. The striker came on as a substitute and scored in the second minute of added time as the game finished 2-1 against Paris Saint-Germain.

“I can’t believe it. It’s incredible. I saw the ball coming towards me and just put it in. It’s the biggest moment of my career,” said match winner Islacker. “We put them under pressure from the off. To score the winner just before the end is unbelievable. We are so proud,” said a stunned Celia Sasic.

Frankfurt controlled the game from the outset in front of 17,147 spectators at a sold-out Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Berlin but were unable to create any good goal scoring opportunities. Their first chance came in the 8th minute as Dzsenifer Marozsan put her free kick straight at PSG goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek. The first real chance of the game came in the 32nd minute, which also resulted in FFC going in front. Kerstin Garefrekes played a deep cross from the halfway line into the six-yard box and Sasic rose highest to head the ball into the far corner.

PSG, who had Germany internationals Annike Krahn and Lira Alushi in their side, did not threaten early on but in the 40th minute Kenza Dali let fly from distance, only to see her effort parried by Desiree Schumann. However, the goalkeeper was unable to do anything about Marie-Laure Delie’s powerful header from the resulting corner and just like that Paris were back on level terms.

Double chance for Sasic and Boquete

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first as Frankfurt came flying out of the traps to create a double chance in the 48th minute. Kiedrzynek was able to parry Sasic’s initial shot aside behind before Krahn had to clear Veronica Boquete’s shot from the resulting corner off the line. Frankfurt were almost celebrating again only three minutes later after Peggy Kuznik’s header.

Alushi was withdrawn after 58 minutes but another German player came on just two minutes later in the form of PSG’s Josephine Henning. Frankfurt were having more of the game at this point and PSG had to work hard to continuously keep FFC away from their goal. Simone Laudehr was the next player to try her luck from distance in the 81st minute but her effort went just over the bar. With only three minutes remaining, Islacker also fired just over.

But Islacker’s time came in injury time as the striker dinked the ball into the back of the PSG net from the penalty spot with the outside of her boot to win the game for Frankfurt.
