Sunday showdown

With wins for FC Bayern, VfB Stuttgart, FC Ingolstadt, SV Darmstadt 98 and Borussia Dortmund already, the pressure is on for FC Schalke 04, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen to perform. Managers have unanimously been stressing the importance of putting in a good performance in the first game back so as to give the team something to build on in the week. One team who could benefit from today’s results are FC Schalke 04, who have spent their winter break working hard in the Florida heat. A win against Werder would see them climb above Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen into fourth place. The odds are in their favour too, as they have won eight and drawn three in their last eleven meetings with Werder. Couple that with the fact that Werder haven’t won in the league since November, and the Royal Blue fans will be in high spirit at the Veltins Arena. Werder though will be determined to get some points on the board early on, as they currently occupy a relegation spot. They also seem to enjoy a Sunday fixture, having claimed ten points from their four Sunday games so far this season, including an impressive win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. Kick-off: Sunday, 17:30 CET.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs. VfL Wolfsburg

The other fixture on Sunday sees Eintracht Frankfurt welcome VfL Wolfsburg to the Commerzbank Arena, a team they have only beaten twice in the Bundesliga in their last 20 attempts. Dieter Hecking’s current Wolfsburg side are though without a win in four, and are therefore enduring their worst run in the league since the beginning of 2014. Frankfurt’s new acquisition Szabolcs Huszti has claimed five wins against the Wolves (more than any other team) in his career, and will no doubt fancy his chances again tomorrow. Having gone through a tough phase at the back end of 2015, Eintracht will be hoping that 2016 brings new success. Wolfsburg will have their eyes set on European football, anything less would be a considered a disappointment, and so will be hoping to get off to a good start. Kick-off: Sunday, 15:30 CET.
