Successful EURO start – U19 defeat Russia 3-2

Germany’s under 19-year olds defeat Russia 3-2 (2-0) to take second place in Group B of the European Championships. The U19 EURO is being held in Austria (July 10-27). A German U19 team has not won the European title for the last 26 years.

In Steyr, one of four host cities in Austria, Nils Petersen gave Germany the lead (11.), converting on a fast-break orchestrated by Änis Ben Hatira (Hamburger SV). When Mesut Özil’s (Schalke 04) shot was blocked, Petersen (FC Carl Zeiss Jena) scored to give Germany the 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Özil extended the lead to 2-0.

Inexplicably, Germany then lost their confidence while Russia started to dominate the game. Frank Engel’s team suddenly faced a superior opponent, which showed when Alexander Saljugin hit the post (23.) and then failed on a header, standing unguarded in front of the German goal.

Russia increased the pressure following halftime. Their efforts were rewarded when Artem Dzuba (Spartak Moscow) scored (58.) from ten meters distance. Just prior to the Russian goal, German keeper Martin Männel (Energie Cottbus) had defused two of Dzuba’s shots.

Russia attacked with almost every player on the field, but Germany, whowing nerves of steel, used their one chance to decide the game. Max Kruse (Werder Bremen), who had just come on the field, hit a 16-meters distance shot (66.). Germany held the 3-1 advantage until the game’s final minute, when Dzuba scored.

“We started-out strong. The 2-0 lead was well deserved. Considering the tremendous heat with almost tropical temperatures, both teams showed an admirable effort”, said German coach Frank Engel. “Of course, I cannot be satisfied with our defensive performance. But heck, winning a tournament opening game is always very important.”

The German line-up:

Männel – Boateng (62., Falkenberg), Eberlein, Höwedes, Feick – Sauter, Konrad – Schwaab, Ben-Hatira (76. Sam), Özil (62. Kruse) – Petersen.

On Wednesday, the German U19 women play Denmark in their opening game of the European Championships. The tournament, the 10th edition of the continental U19 championships, is being played on Iceland. Four-time champions Germany face Denmark, Norway (Friday) and host-country Iceland (Monday) in the group games.
