Germany skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger and his new club Manchester United got off to a successful start to their new Premier League campaign, winning 1-0 at Old Trafford against Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a first half own goal by Kyle Walker. Schweinsteiger, who according to coach Louis van Gaal is "not fit enough yet" for the starting XI, was brought on in the second half to become the first German player for the Red Devils.
The hosts struggled in the first half but still managed to take the lead in the 22nd second, as Spurs defender Kyle Walker scored at the wrong end in an attempt to dispossess Wayne Rooney. Tottenham were less threatening in the second half, as United secured the first victory of the new season.
Schweinsteiger was well received by the 75,261-strong crowd in the "Theatre of Dreams" when he began to warm-up at the start of the second half. He replaced Michael Carrick and immediately took command in United's midfield until the final whistle.
