Stuttgart relegated, Frankfurt drop into play-off spot

VfB Stuttgart have been relegated from the Bundesliga for a second time and Eintracht Frankfurt dropped into the relegation play-off spot, as the fierce relegation battle in Germany's top flight was concluded on matchday 34. Stuttgart head down into the second division alongside Hannover following a 3-1 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg. Werder Bremen on the other hand secured their survival with a 1-0 win over direct opponents Eintracht Frankfurt, who now face 1. FC Nürnberg in a two-legged play-off with their Bundesliga survival on the line.

FC Schalke 04 romped to a 4-1 victory over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in their final match under coach Andre Breitenreiter and thus confirmed their place in the Europa League group stages after finishing fifth. They are joined by 1. FSV Mainz 05, who claimed sixth place after a 0-0 draw with Hertha BSC. Hertha will therefore have to qualify for the Europa League after dropping back into seventh.

Champions FC Bayern München concluded their last Bundesliga campaign under Pep Guardiola with a 3-1 win over last-placed Hannover 96, while Borussia Dortmund were held to a 2-2 draw at home by 1. FC Köln. Bayer Leverkusen fought back against FC Ingolstadt to record a 3-2 victory at home, Borussia Mönchengladbach earned a 2-0 win at SV Darmstadt and Hamburger SV bagged a 3-1 win away at FC Augsburg.

Djilobodji saves Bremen

Wolfsburg took an early lead in the Volkswagen Arena through former Germany U21 international Maximilian Arnold. World Champion André Schürrle doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark, but Daniel Didavi restored some hope for the visitors late in the second half, before a second strike from Schürrle in stoppage ensured Wolfsburg's victory.

42,100 spectators in Bremen's sold-out Weserstadion saw Eintracht Frankfurt record the first chance after 20 minutes, keeper Felix Wiedwald making a good save against Makoto Hasebe. Werder pushed for the opener in the closing stages, before Papy Djilobodji tapped in from close range after 88 minutes to give Bremen a dramatic victory and secure their Bundesliga survival.

Schalke and Mainz qualify for Europa League

Schalke got off to the perfect start in Sinsheim with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finding the target after just seven minutes. Schalke controlled the game from here on and added a second goal through Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. Mark Uth was able to pull a goal back for TSG shortly before half-time, but Germany international Leroy Sane restored Schalke's two goal advantage after the break. Hoffenheim's Fabian Schär scored an own-goal shortly before the final whistle to round off Schalke's 4-1 win.

Robert Lewandowski's 30th goal of the season gave FC Bayern the lead in the Allianz Arena. World Champion Mario Götze bagged a brace before Artur Sobiech grabbed a consolation goal midway through the second half. Bayern created more chances but ultimately settled for the 3-1 win, before they were presented with their 26th Bundesliga title in front of a selection of club legends.

BVB rescue home point

Borussia Dortmund looked to be on course for a victory after Gonzalo Castro opened the scoring in the eleventh minute, but Köln replied with two perfectly-executed attacks finished off by Anthony Modeste and Milos Jojic in the first half. Germany international Marco Reus scored a direct free kick in the second half to salvage a point for the home side.

Leverkusen conceded the opener against Ingolstadt when Mathew Leckie found the target after 16 minutes. Goals from Charles Aranguiz and Kevin Kampl turned the game back in Leverkusen’s favour before half time. Stefan Kießling scored a third for Leverkusen just before the hour mark, before Moritz Hartmann's converted penalty reduced their lead to one after 69 minutes.

Away victories for Gladbach and HSV

Borussia Mönchengladbach claimed their first away victory since October 2015 with a 2-0 win at Darmstadt. Thorgan Hazard and André Hahn provided the goals.

Alfred Finnbogason opened the scoring in Augsburg, but HSV replied with a brace from Michael Gregoritsch and a strike by Nicolai Müller as HSV bag a 3-1 victory.
