Stunning turnaround gives DFB-Team victory

The Germany U18s claimed a dramatic victory over their Irish counterparts in Salou on Sunday. The side, coached by Meikel Schönweitz, found themselves 2-0 down with 20 minutes to play but showed great character to record an impressive 3-2 triumph.

The head coach was pleased with his players after the final whistle. “Our play was hectic early on but once we settled down, things began to improve. Our character and quality shone through,” explained Schönweitz. “The 12 debutants were impressive.”

This was the first game that featured a side where all active players were born in 1999. The Irish netted on the stroke of half time and against shortly after the hour mark, but were unable to see the game out. Goals from Timothy Tillmann (72’), Manuel Wintzheimer (85’) and Gabriel Kyeremateng (89’) completed the turnaround in the closing stages of an action-packed match.

The DFB-Team return to action on Monday, this time against the Netherlands (14:00 CET).
