Stunning start for the DFB Team

Germany got their Women’s World Cup campaign off to a flying start in Canada. Silvia Neid’s side beat the Ivory Coast 10-0 in their opening group game. Elsewhere in Group B, Norway were victorious against Thailand (4-0).

Goals from Celia Sasic (3’, 14’, 31’) and Anja Mittag (29’, 35’) saw Germany build a 5-0 half time lead. A further goal from Mittag (64’) as well as strikes from Simone Laudehr (71’), Sara Däbritz (75’), Melanie Behringer (79’) and Alexandra Popp completed the rout. On Thursday they face Norway (22:00 CEST).

“It’s sometimes trickier on this surface – it makes everything feel warmer and the quality of air isn’t great,” Sasic told ZDFafter the game, which explained her removal at the break. “On pitches like these it’s important to share the burden and we have a strong enough bench to deal with rotation.” Silvia Neid was delighted with the result: “We had the right mindset. It was important to score early on as that put them on the back foot. We created a lot of chances.”

Strong start

Germany had been warned not to underestimate the minnows in the game, which took place in front of 20,953 spectators in Ottawa. They started strongly and positively, which was rewarded after three minutes when Sasic fired home after great work from Simone Laudehr and Leonie Maier. "We started strongly. We knew that the Ivory Coast are good on the counter but thankfully Celia made the most of our first opportunity,” explained Lena Goeßling.

The DFB-Team were dominant from start to finish and could have had more goals in the opening stages but Popp (8’, 10’) and Sasic (12’, 13’) were thwarted. It didn’t take long for them to double their advantage though – Sasic headed past Dominique Thiamale after just 14 minutes.

Domination from start to finish

After a stunning start, Germany sat back somewhat but without letting their control slip. The Ivory Coast did pose sporadic problems on their right hand side but found Leverkusen’s Annike Krahn in imperious form. The only blot on the copybook game after 17 minutes when Melanie Leupolz went off injured. She was replaced by FC Bayern teammate Melanie Behringer.

Five more goals after the break

World Cup debutant Däbritz replaced hat-trick hero Sasic at the break and marked her emergence on the big stage with a goal with 15 minutes left on the clock. Before Däbritz got on the scoresheet Mittag completed her treble and Laudehr struck. Late goals from Behringer and Popp completed the rout.

Despite the heavy defeat, the Ivory Coast were constantly cheered on by their countless supporters.
