Striker Meier out until end of the season

Eintracht Frankfurt will be without top scorer Alexander Meier until the end of the season as they battle to qualify for the Europa League. The club announced on Monday that the 32-year-old would miss the remaining six games of the season due to a knee injury. “It’s very unfortunate that I can’t finish the season and help the team. I’m going to try and be back as quickly as possible,” said Meier, who will undergo an operation on his patella tendon on Tuesday. “This injury has hit us hard,” said manager Thomas Schaaf.

Meier is currently the top goal scorer in the Bundesliga with 19 goals and is one of the main reasons why Frankfurt currently sit in eighth, only four points behind sixth placed FC Augsburg. They could still qualify for the Europa League next season but seventh place could also be enough, which is currently occupied by 1899 Hoffenheim, who sit only two points ahead of the Eagles.
