Streichsbier selects final EURO squad

Germany U19's head coach Guido Streichsbier announced his final squad for the UEFA European U19 Championship on the final day of his team’s training camp in Schladming. Matthias Bader (Karlsruher SC), Johannes Eggestein (SV Werder Bremen), Tsiy-William Ndenge (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Leandro Putaro (VfL Wolfsburg) and goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas (Borussia Mönchengladbach), who was called up late as a replacement, did not make the cut, as the 47-year old was forced to cut down the 23 man squad that he has been working intensively with over the past seven days. Midfielder Arianit Ferati (Fortuna Düsseldorf) and goalkeeper Timo Königsmann (Hannover 96), who was replaced by Moritz Nicolas, had to leave the squad due to injury during the training camp.

“It was a very difficult decision for us,” explained Streichsbier. He continued, “Above all, it was hard because the boys have a lot of quality and are a close-knit group. The home European Championship is their overall target and a dream for them. To only have to send five players home wasn’t a particularly pleasant task but it’s a part of international football. It was a chance for the 1998 group of Johannes Eggestein, Gökhan Gül and Janni-Luca Serra to see how they can could contribute to the 1997 squad with their exceptional quality. Gökham and Janni were lucky that there was more demand for players in their positions.”

“We want to achieve the maximum”

After having completed a friendly against a selection of players from 1860 München on Tuesday morning, the U19 coaching team consisting of Guido Streichsbier, Antonio di Salvo, Meikel Schönweitz, Marc Ziegler and Christian Schwend selected their 18-man squad for the UEFA European U19 Championship.

“We want to try to reach our aims at the UEFA U19 EURO from the 11th July with these players,” said Streichsbier. “I am optimistic about what we can achieve together, especially as the European U19 Championship is a part of the qualification process for the 2017 U20 World Cup (the top five teams qualify, there is a play off for the fifth spot). This is our primary objective as we want our players to be a part of as many tournaments as possible so we can round off their club trainings with internationals. As the players and coaches, we want to achieve the maximum.”

The 23 players and the support staff all left the training camp in Schladming on Tuesday afternoon. They will spend two days at home on Wednesday and Thursday before meeting up on Friday to continue preparing ahead of Monday’s opening game against Italy (12:00 CEST) in the Stuttgart Arena.
